When the Ukrainian Hub Cymru Wales was faced with the sudden challenge of losing its base earlier this year, what began as a moment of crisis soon became a story of community spirit, resilience, and partnership.
Formed in 2022 as Cardiff for Ukraine, the group initially focused on collecting humanitarian aid for those affected by the war in Ukraine. Over time, it evolved into a vital community hub, supporting Ukrainian refugees who had made Wales their temporary home.
Earlier this year, the Hub received unexpected notice to vacate its previous premises, giving the team just 28 days to find a new location. “We received the devastating news that the Capitol Centre was being redeveloped,” said Helen McAdie, one of the organisation’s founders. “It came around the anniversary of the invasion, when emotions were already running high. It felt like facing displacement all over again, only this time, here in Wales.”
Recognising the urgent need, Seraph Property Management stepped in to help find a solution. With the support of one of our very generous landlords, the Hub was offered a new office suite on St Andrews Crescent, right in the heart of Cardiff city centre. The central location ensures continued accessibility for the Ukrainian community and volunteers who rely on its support.
With the help of a grant from The National Lottery Community Fund, the organisation was able to secure the new premises for the next two years. Additional funding from Monmouthshire Building Society enabled improvements to the community space, including the installation of new flooring to accommodate dancing and wellbeing activities.
“The sense of relief among our volunteers and community was overwhelming,” Helen added. “Losing our space would have been devastating after everything we’ve built together over the last three years. We are profoundly grateful to The National Lottery, Seraph Property Management, the landlord and everyone who supported us during those uncertain weeks. Thanks to them, we now have not just a new building, but a new beginning.”
To celebrate the hub’s reopening, First Minister Eluned Morgan unveiled a commemorative plaque recognising the organisation’s work and community spirit. She said:
“The Ukrainian Hub Cymru Wales exemplifies the very best of our Welsh values of welcome, community and solidarity. What started as a grassroots response to a crisis has blossomed into something truly remarkable.”
Douglas Haig, Managing Director at Seraph Property Management, added:
“Supporting initiatives that bring people together and create lasting impact across Wales is incredibly important to us at Seraph. We’re proud to have played a part in helping the Ukrainian Hub continue its vital work and remain at the heart of the community. The support our client has shown the Ukrainian Hub in offering this space is incredible.“
At Seraph, we believe that strong communities are built through collaboration, compassion, and shared purpose. The story of the Ukrainian Hub Cymru Wales stands as a testament to what can be achieved when local organisations, partners, and people come together to make a difference.
