Tenancy Hardship Scheme extended in Wales

18th January 2022

Tenancy Hardship Scheme

The Welsh government has announced that the Tenancy Hardship Grant Scheme has been extended in Wales, this is to support more tenants who may have fallen into arrears due to the impact of Covid-19.

What’s changed?

The scheme now covers tenants who have not been able to make rental payments until December 2021. This was previously only applicable for those tenants who fell into arrears prior to 30th June 2021.

Who is eligible?

Tenants who rent a property in Wales, who have are at least two months behind on their rent until 31st December 2021. The rent arrears accumulated must be as a result of the pandemic. This is not for people in receipt of housing benefits.

The extension to the tenancy hardship scheme is welcomed by the industry as it allows for both tenants, landlords as well as managing agents to support anyone in rent arrears. It means that tenants and landlords can be relieved of the financial pressure of rent, with the landlord receiving the grant directly.

Overall, we know that Covid-19 has had a significant detrimental impact, both economically and financially. all over the UK and the world. While it has had negative impacts on almost everyone, it is no surprise that those who were already in a delicate life balance were hit hardest by the pandemic. Because of this, the extension to the Tenant Hardship scheme is very much welcomed. It is a clear act to assist those that are in need of financial help.
